MATERIALS
Yarn: DK weight. Shown in Polka Dot Sheep Stumptown DK.
- Color A (Winter Raven): 115 yd / 105 m
- Color B (Beargrass): 55 yd. / 50 m
Needles: Choose the needle type for your preferred method of small circumference knitting in the round (16” / 40 cm circular, double pointed, magic loop etc.) in the following size:
- US 4 / 3.5mm (for adult small hat)
- US 5 / 3.75mm (for adult large hat)
Notions: (1) stitch marker, a tape measure, and a darning needle for weaving ends.
GAUGE
22 (20) stitches & 22 (20) rows to 4” / 10cm in Stockinette Stitch.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS (circumference x height)
For best fit, plan 1—3” negative ease.
- 20.25 x 8” (51.5 x 20.25mm) / adult small hat
- 22.5 x 9” (57 x 23mm) / adult large hat
NOTES
- The stitch count remains the same for both sizes. Adjust the circumference of your hat with needle size and gauge.
- Little Ice Age is worked in the round from the brim up.
- The “knit-in-hem” gives the inside brim a wonderfully smooth finish and is recommended. If you prefer you may omit the “work hem” round and simply sew the hem neatly to the inside when finished.
